For years the hardest part of a weekend in Sonoita–Elgin wine country was finding somewhere to sleep that was actually in it. The region has a handful of inns and rentals scattered along the highways, but nothing where you could finish a tasting, have dinner, and walk back to bed along the vines. That is what the Casitas at Los Milics Vineyards were built to fix: nine small modern houses set in the middle of our estate vineyard, a short walk from the tasting room and The Biscuit.
Here is what a stay actually looks like, hour by hour, so you know what you are booking.
The short version
- What it is: nine one-bedroom, one-bath stand-alone casitas inside the vineyard, each with floor-to-ceiling windows and a private patio facing the Mustang Mountains.
- What’s included: breakfast pre-stocked in the casita, a Nespresso machine, a small kitchen with wine cooler, robes and slippers, and half bottles of our wine waiting on arrival.
- The walk: a lit path to the tasting room and The Biscuit — no driving after dinner.
- Booking: opens six months out at losmilicsvineyards.com/casitas; reservation fees at the tasting room and The Biscuit are waived for casita guests.
Arriving: check in at the tasting room
From Tucson it is about 45 minutes: I-10 east to exit 281, then AZ-83 south. Just after mile marker 43 you crest the pass and get your first look at the Biscuit — the round-topped mountain the restaurant is named for — off to the left. From there it is a left onto AZ-82, seven miles east, a right onto Upper Elgin Road, and the vineyard entrance is on your left just past the first farm. From Phoenix or Scottsdale, it is the same route, under three hours door to door.
Check-in is at the tasting room, which is the right way to start: you get your keys with a glass in hand. After that, signs lead you to dedicated casita parking, and the rest of the stay happens on foot.

The casita itself
Each one is a stand-alone “small house” with a modern open plan. By day it is a living room with a workspace wall and a small kitchen; at night the living space becomes a king-size bed at the push of a button, and the wall unit converts to a full-size bed if you are traveling with kids or friends. Floor-to-ceiling glass runs along one side, so the vines and the Mustang Mountains are the view from the bed, the sofa and the patio alike.
The kitchen has a wine cooler, a refrigerator and a Nespresso machine. There are plush robes, slippers and proper towels. Two half bottles of our wine are waiting when you open the door, which sets the tone for the next 24 hours.
Breakfast is already in the casita when you arrive — orange juice, pastries and coffee — so the morning does not depend on anyone’s schedule but yours. We also offer brunch in our tasting room on weekends if you are looking for a hot, fresh breakfast complete with mimosas and breakfast cocktails. Pet-friendly casitas are available; say so when you book.
Afternoon: the tasting room, and the vines
The Elgin tasting room is the reason USA Today readers have voted Los Milics one of the Top 5 tasting rooms in the country — a long, low building of glass and steel that frames the mountains rather than competing with them. A casita stay is the one time you can taste without a clock: have the flight, order shared plates for a late lunch, and stay as long as the light is good. The tasting room is open 11am to 4pm on weekdays and from 10am on weekends.
If you want to see what you are drinking, book a private tour for a Saturday or Sunday and walk the vineyard with someone who works it. The vines you can see from your patio are often the ones in your glass.
Evening: dinner at The Biscuit
At 5:30pm the tasting room turns into The Biscuit, the vineyard’s restaurant, open seven days a week with a last seating at 7:30pm. Recently named one of the best winery restaurants in the world by Wine Enthusiast, The Biscuit’s menu is casually elegant and built to complement our wines, with a pairing suggested for each entrée. Save room for dessert — guests write to us about it.
When you book a casita we are happy to make your dinner reservation at the same time, and the reservation fee is waived for casita guests. Then the best part: no car keys. The path back to the casitas is lit, the sky is not, and the stars at 5,000 feet are the kind you forgot existed.
“The next morning, we woke to a breathtaking sunrise over the Mustang Mountains from the comfort of our cozy bed. A breakfast basket with fresh orange juice and a Nespresso machine added to the charm.”Maria, casita guest
Morning: sunrise, coffee, and nowhere to be
Get up for the sunrise. Every guest who has stayed says the same thing, and the casitas are laid out so that each patio gets the mountains to itself. Make a coffee, take your breakfast outside, and watch the light come across the vineyard. Then do nothing for a while. That is what the place is for. After enjoying a lazy morning, walk to the tasting room for brunch with a view (available on Saturdays and Sundays only). Morning yoga classes are offered on our tasting room patio once a month. See our events page for available dates.

If you stay a second night
One night gives you the vineyard. Two gives you the region. Everything below is within half an hour of your casita:
- The Sonoita–Elgin Wine Trail — sixteen wineries within a few miles of each other, most welcoming walk-ins on a weekend afternoon. Our neighbors include some of Arizona’s founding producers.
- Historic Empire Ranch — fifteen minutes away on AZ-83, a working ranch headquarters dating to 1870 with a 29-room adobe ranch house on the National Register, trails through Las Cienegas National Conservation Area, and a gift shop worth the stop. We are proud to partner with the ranch on its 150th anniversary.
- Kartchner Caverns State Park — a rare living cave; reserve tour tickets ahead, it is one of the busiest attractions in the state.
- Ramsey Canyon Preserve — hiking and birding in a migratory corridor famous for hummingbirds.
Forty-five minutes gets you Bisbee, Tombstone and the Pima Air & Space Museum; an hour to ninety minutes gets you Tubac, Tumacácori, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and San Xavier del Bac. The full list, organized by drive time, is on the casitas page. If you want the two-day version mapped out, read our weekend itinerary from Tucson to Sonoita and Elgin.
Celebrations and small groups
With nine casitas and a restaurant on site, the vineyard works for the kind of weekend that needs a reason: an anniversary, a milestone birthday, a small wedding or a rehearsal dinner with everyone sleeping a few steps apart. Our events team handles gatherings from six to just over a hundred guests across the indoor and outdoor spaces. Start planning your special event by filling out the form on our private event page.
Before you book
- Booking window: casitas open six months in advance. For dates beyond that, email casitas@losmilics.com.
- Dinner: ask us to reserve The Biscuit when you book your stay — it is small, and weekends fill.
- Weather: Elgin sits around 5,000 feet. It runs cooler than Tucson and Phoenix year-round; bring a layer for the patio after dark, in any season.
- Take it home: every wine you tasted is in the shop, and Wine Club members get complimentary tastings at all three locations — a good reason to join before your next stay.
